The 21st century is the era of international communication and global commerce. English is the primary language in this highly competitive world. To help the next generation of professionals we provide students with access to native spoken English in the form of theatre as a learning tool. However, our aim is not to produce shows especially for schools as a back up to the teaching curriculum, but to introduce students to professional English touring theatre and therefore make them familiar with the living language which they will encounter every day in the near future.
Introducing even very young children to a genuine theatre environment in the language they are learning provides a lively and advanced stimulus for both language learning and an appreciation of the performing arts.
For the last 15 years Universal Arts has been involved in providing theatre as an English language learning tool. Having initiated the English Theatre Company of Poland, which has grown in scale and popularity since 1998, we are now extending that formula. As one of the most established theatre presenters at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe for 18 years, we are in a position to select from a wide range of quality current British productions. We select existing productions to match dynamic shows with comprehensible language. In order to meet the needs and preferences of different age groups in primary, as well as secondary, schools all shows are graded according to pupils’ age, skills level and interest.
To deepen the linguistic knowledge and understanding of each play, teachers will be able to download full scripts and additional material in advance of the live performance. Prior to attending the show we encourage teachers to work with pupils on vocabulary and the general theme of the production, but without revealing the plot.
